Nothing is as unpredictable as life; nothing as precarious as our happiness. On any given day, we wake up contemplating our plans for the day, looking forward to a happy and stable future that we believe lies in front of us, giving thanks for everything we have and then, in an instant, life strikes one of its terrible blows, shaking us down to our very core, making us question everything we considered to be certain up to that point. We suddenly realize that we don’t know where to go or what to do.
The ancient Greeks believed their lives were controlled by their gods, thus explaining all events that affected their lives – favorably or unfavorably. And it is sometimes very easy to believe, in spite of our modern-day rationality, that Destiny, Karma, Fate or predestination somehow rule the inexplicable, fortuitous and irrational events in our lives. Decisions that may seem to be irrelevant can lead us to unexpected situations that will utterly change the course of our lives.
There are many people who suffer terrible blows in life and when these tragedies occur, they are not struck down; they’re able to endure and reach higher spiritual levels, demonstrating a kind of courage and strength that I admire from the deepest recesses of my heart. I really don’t know if I would be able to find the ability to cope, to be resilient and to not lose hope. All I can do is learn from these amazing people and to love and support those who are close to me and are going through difficult times.
